• Holistic Living: The Spirit

This is the fourth and final installment of the series on holistic living. You can find the foundation here, What is Holistic Living?, a more in-depth look at the mind here, Holistic Living: The Mind, and the body here, Holistic Living: The Body. You can also check out these resources that can help you infuse holistic living into your daily lives.

Holistic living is the endeavor to find balance between your mind, body and spirit. Having already taken a deeper look at both the mind and body, we will complete our journey towards a better understanding of this balance by discussing the spirit.

Chances are that if you find yourself reading this blog, you believe in some kind of higher power. We believe that there is something more going on than the perceived reality. Some people call this power God, the universe, spirit or love. We are not going to put a name to this power because names come with certain connotations that we wish to avoid.Holistic Living: The Spirit

Religion’s role in our lives is to connect us to whatever higher power you believe in and with the rest of the world. But somewhere along the line, organized religion fell into disarray and chose rather to divide us into believers and non-believers. Spirituality became an us vs. them mentality that has resulted in petty conflicts, murders, and wars. Something within us tells us that that does not seem quite right.

    Individual Division

This tendency towards division extended from a group level to an individual level. We became dualistic in our thoughts and our actions. Life became black and white, sacred and profane. Even now, we find ourselves doing things that we really do not want to. We lie, cheat, steal, mock, and all other sins or vices that cause us and others pain. Paul, one of the first Christians, said it well: “For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.”

When we cannot connect to the spirit within and without us, we become imbalanced, and we live in a way that we do not like. Anybody who has lived can attest to the truth that we are not perfect and are upset at our imperfection. The problem is that we do not know what to do with ourselves to change our imperfections.

    Sacred & Profane

The journey of the spirit is the journey towards joy and bliss. In our attempt to separate the sacred from the profane, we lost vision of the sacred. The higher power that we believe in is not someone or something just out there. It is something within us and all around us! Spirit is in all things!

When we can finally see the sacred in the seemingly mundane things, life becomes this beautiful dance of human and divine intertwining as one. You are more than you think, and life is more than what you have known. The profane and mundane becomes sacred and holy, and that includes you.

But none of us can do this thing called life alone. When talking about spirit, we inherently speak of something bigger than ourselves, which includes all those around us. That is the purpose of the Inner Spirit Club, to connect those on a journey to discover the essence of spirituality and holistic living. We invite you to partner with us as we walk on the path towards holistic living.

We leave you with this poem by Rumi, the Muslim Sufi mystic.

Love is the dancing cry of the soul, calling the body to worship

Like a shining whirlpool, or a spinning mayfly

So is love among the skies.

I leap across the mountaintops, madly singing the song of all songs
I float through the ether, intoxicated, thrilled
I think only of your love, your calling to me
And I dance the thousand dances of love, all returning to you.

It is not the play of children, nor the detached unity of wise sages
    Unreal! Unnecessary!
    Where is the beauty?

When I, like a glowing comet, may flash around your sun
Laughing, singing, with the joy of loving you!

Wine makes drunk the mind and body
But it is love which thrills the soul
When I approach you, I feel the mad pounding of love
    The singing wonder
The joy which opens blossoms on the trees of the world.

Come to me, and I shall dance with you
In the temples, on the beaches, through the crowded streets
Be you man or woman, plant or animal, slave or free
I shall show you the brilliant crystal fires, shining within
I shall show you the beauty deep within your soul
I shall show the path beyond Heaven.

Only dance, and your illusions will blow in the wind
Dance, and make joyous the love around you
Dance, and your veils which hide the Light
Shall swirl in a heap at your feet.
